Under construction: Lekki-Ikoyi Cable Bridge [completed]

The Lekki-Ikoyi Cable Bridge is going to be one of the first major cable stayed bridges to be built in West Africa when completed by the year 2012.

The 1.4km long bridge with a cable stayed pylon of 90m the middle and a full span approach and departing bridge linking Admiralty Way to Bourdillon Road.

The Lekki-Ikoyi Cable Bridge located in the metropolis of Lagos, one of the most populous cities in the world, will connect two heavily congested districts, thereby relieving city traffic.

The plans for Nigeria’s first cable-stayed bridge were drawn up by design specialists from Bilfinger Berger Nigeria GmbH.

The structure comprises a 700-meter full-span approach bridge. Connected to this is a segmental bridge of more than 600 meters in length, at the center of which is a 91-meter high pylon.

In line with Governor Fashola’s desire to ensure that all infrastructural facilities in Lagos State conform with the Lagos Mega City status by the year 2015, his administration decided to construct Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, conceived as a solution to the problem of the perennial traffic bottleneck on Lekki-Epe Road particularly the Elegushi Round About in Lekki Phase 1.

The construction which was awarded to Julius Berger began in 2009 and it is hoped that the bridge will reduce the travelling time along Falomo Bridge, Alfred Rewane Road, Independence Bridge and Ahmadu Bello Way when completed later in 2012.

The multi billion naira project will have a total length of 1358 metres, the cable bridge itself will have a length of 170 metres of the suspended section.

The width of the bridge will be 8m x 2 with a walkway of 2.0m x 2 while the height of the pylon will be 87 metres from water level amongst other details.

Already, the contract period is half way gone while the actual work done is said to have reached advanced stages.

The Lekki-Ikoyi Cable Bridge will not only ease traffic but also beautify the area as it has been regarded as a timeless monument for the future.
