The Lagos-Calabar coastal railway project with the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) fresh mandate was signed by the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi on behalf of Federal Government on July 1, 2016 to commence construction at a cost of $11.117 billion. The contract was renegotiated and reviewed downward to $11.117 billion from the $11.917 billion it was initially valued at when it was initiated by the Goodluck Jonathan administration thereby saving a whooping $800million. “What we have done today is signing same contract but different contract sum to make it legal”, he said. The Lagos – Calabar Coastal Railway project will run through Calabar – Uyo – Aba – Port Harcourt – Yenogua – Otuoke – Ughelli – Warri – Sapele – Benin – Ore – Ijebu-Ode – Lagos with a target of covering all the Seaports along those Routes in good time. The Minister further said part of the contract agreement with CCECC is to expedite action and conclude arrangement with the China-Exim Bank to facilitate the commencement of work on the Railway project noting that his desire and expectation is the completion of the project in two years. On the funding of the project, the Minister assured that funding would not pose any hindrance to the smooth commencement and final completion of the Coastal Railway project. “President Muhammadu Buhari has assured me that he is committed to the development of the Railway Sector in Nigeria and would not leave any ‘stone unturned’ to achieving that dream”, he said. The railway will run through 10 states of the Southeast and the Southsouth’s Niger Delta, terminating at Calabar, the Cross River State capital. The trains for the route will travel at 120km/h and stop at 22 stations. As a huge infrastructural development project, we believe it will enhance tourism and help increase the economic performance of the country.
A Tour into Southern Nigeria’s Tourist Centre: Olumo Rock
Let’s have a bit of an exercise. Take a minute to think about this. How often have you considered going on a vacation or having fun out? How many of those times did coming to Nigeria ever cross your mind? I know, right! It probably never did. Some might believe Nigeria does not have exciting Tourist Centres, Conservations, or Parks. You may have been correct many years ago, but the narrative has changed. Nigeria has many beautiful and exciting places to create beautiful memories with friends and loved ones. At come-to-Nigeria, we have compiled a list of these places and will review them one after another. Today’s article will be focused on the very revered Olumo Rock.Ready for the ride? Get your seat belts on, and let’s roll. What is Olumo Rock? Olumo Rock is one of Nigeria’s most iconic natural and cultural landmarks, located in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State in the southwestern part of the country. It’s more than just a geological formation—Olumo Rock is a symbol of protection, resilience, and history, especially for the Egba people of Yorubaland. Here’s a deeper look into the experience of touring Olumo Rock: Height: Approximately 137 meters (450 feet) above sea level. Name Meaning: “Olumo” comes from the Yoruba words “Olu” (God) and “Mo” (molded)—interpreted as “God has molded.” Composition: It’s a massive outcrop of granite rocks that has naturally formed caves, walkways, and platforms. History of Olumo Rock Olumo Rock was discovered in the Nineteenth-century by a hunter who sorts refuge in the Rock during an intertribal conflict. At the time, the Oyo Empire was disintegrating, and this hunter, a leader of the Egba refugees, was on the run and found refuge beneath the Rock. Olumo Rock is located in Abeokuta, Ogun state. Its name is coined from combining two words, “Olu”, which means deity, and “Mo”, which means moulded. The Egba clan believed that the Rock provided protection and defence for them during the conflict; this is why the Olumo Rock is highly esteemed by this clan, as it gave them a clear view of their approaching enemies during war and helped the Egba people gain victory. On the 3rd of February, 1976, Olumo Rock was commissioned as a tourist centre by former Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo. The exciting experience is beyond staring at the Rock. There are facilities around the tourist centre that will make your experience worthwhile. Would you like to find out? Then, read on. What you’d find at the Olumo Rock Tourist Centre: Over the years, many facilities have been implemented to make the Olumo Rock tourism experience exciting. The Olumo Rock is as high as 137 metres. Even though not so high compared to the Zuma Rock in Abuja, an elevator has been mounted for those who want to skip the fun part of climbing the stairs. Caves and Tunnels: At the Olumo Rock tourist centre, there are caves and tunnels that you might want to explore right at the base of the Rock. One of the caves is called “Iya Orisa”, which means Mother of the Gods. The people believe that this deity dwells in that cave. Shrine: The indigenes of Egba built a shrine where they worship the deity and make sacrifices to it. Some shrines are specific for healing practices, while others are for more diabolic and spiritual exercises like sacrificing to the deity and paying due homage. While you are on tourism, it would be wise to stay away from the shrine as acting in ignorance could bring inevitable consequences that you may not be able to bear. Museum: The Museum is one place you should not miss out on while exploring. The Olumo Rock Museum has a record of all the old things that happened around and in Olumo Rock and Abeokuta in general. You will find an exhibition of crafted images, photographs, and everything on the history and culture of Abeokuta. Cable Car: If you want a stress-free tour, you prefer to sit and watch; a cable car is available to drive you from the base of the Rock to its top. All you need to do is, sit pretty and enjoy the view. Garden: Remember that proposal you’ve been planning? The garden would be an excellent place to make it. With beautiful and colourful flowers, which could make it almost impossible for your proposal to go wrong. Picnic spot: If you decide to have homemade meals while you connect with your family, friends, or team members, the Picnic spot is a good space, with excellent views around to make your hangout private in a public place. Restaurants: You probably are like me, who does not like to travel with so much luggage. That’s Ok. You do not need to worry about your feeding because, at Olumo Rock tourist centre, various restaurants have various meals to suit your cravings. Convenience Rooms: There are convenience rooms around the tourist centre. If you need to make yourself convenient, you don’t need to worry about finding toilets and bathrooms. Hotels: You probably intend to experience every beauty that Olumo Rock offers, and you might be unable to cover all these in a day. There are affordable hotels where you can lodge for as long as you intend. Theatre: Last but not the least on this list. It has an outdoor theatre where cultural activities, music concerts, and performances are held Meet the Tour Guides & Elders Often, you’ll find resident guides and even descendants of those who took refuge there centuries ago. They tell stories passed down orally, giving the tour a lively, storytelling feel full of Yoruba proverbs and history. Travel Tips Best time to visit: Dry season (November–March) for easier climbing and clearer views. Wear: Comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. Don’t Miss: Trying the local cuisine in Abeokuta—especially Ofada rice and Ayamase stew. Conclusion You have gone through this ride with us, and I’m sure you had your seat belt on the entire time. One beautiful thing about

THE PERFECT SPOT AT FARIN RUWA FALLS, NASARAWA STATE City Breaks: Urban Adventures in Vibrant Metropolises
Farin Ruwa Falls is a waterfall found in the central region of Nigeria . It is among the highest waterfalls in Nigeria. It is significant among Africa’s falls when the total height covered by the waterfall is considered. The source of Farin Ruwa falls is found on the Nasarawa State , from whence it gushes down over the edge of theNasarawa. During its descent from the Jos Plateau, the water drops a total height of about 150 metres (about 492 ft). This drop is higher compared to the more popular Victoria Falls, which drops a height of around 108 metres (about 354 ft) during its descent. Majestic Waterfall Farin Ruwa Falls is one of Nigeria’s most stunning waterfalls, with water cascading down from a height of about 150 meters. Its name, “Farin Ruwa,” means “white water” in the local language, referring to the foamy white spray created by the water’s powerful descent. Scenic Location & Natural Beauty The falls are surrounded by lush green vegetation, making it a popular spot for nature lovers and adventurers. The breathtaking views, combined with the tranquil atmosphere, offer visitors the perfect escape from city life. Adventure & Exploration Farin Ruwa Falls is a hidden gem in Nasarawa State, attracting tourists interested in trekking, hiking, and photography. The site is relatively undiscovered, making it an ideal location for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure and a chance to experience Nigeria’s natural beauty up close. LOCATION Farin Ruwa falls is found in the Farin Ruwa Development Area, under Wamba Local Government Area of Nasarawa State . The falls is found along the boundary of Plateau State and Nasarawa State , under the Bokkos and Wamba Local Government Areas of the two states. The falls has its source on the Jos plateau, in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. The falls was discovered by the then British colonial rulers of Nigeria in the 1950s. A catering Rest House was established in MASSANGE village close to the falls in order to exploit it commercially. To protect its rich heritage, the colonial administration gazetted it and named it MAYES Forest Reserve. However, despite this early development, Farin Ruwa was consigned to the background until the creation of Nasarawa State in 1996. The waterfall is about 120 kilometres from Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital, and 30 kilometres from Wamba town. HISTORY AND ORIGIN Farin Ruwa is a Hausa language word meaning ‘white water’. Farin Ruwa is a description of the nature of the falls by the local inhabitants of the Farin Ruwa area. The height covered during the descent of the falls is very great, so that the descending water crashes during its way down the Jos plateau escarpment. The falls gradually turns white in colour as a result of the height covered by the falls during its descent. The falls, as a result of its white colour, appears in the distance to the inhabitants of the Farin Ruwa area like white smoke on the mountains. This white nature of the falls earned it the name Farin Ruwa from the inhabitants. ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE The mountainous nature of the region surrounding the Farin Ruwa falls induces heavy rainfall from clouds passing over the region during the rainy season from March to November. As a result, there is an increase in the volume of water of the falls crashing from the mountains during the rainy season. The mountains around the falls are the edge of the Jos Plateau. There is a drop in the volume of water of the falls during the dry season , from December to March. But it is for a short while, as the falls recovers its water volume again during the rainy season. The tourism industry in Nigeria is still a developing industry. It has not done much to open or to showcase the waterfall to the world. This factor has resulted in the low level of tourism activities around the waterfall. But plans are on to develop the full potentials of the fall
