The New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja is a place to be for total entertainment on Lagos mainland. Run by Femi Kuti (Fela Kuti’s son), this is a great rock temple in Lagos city and the best night to go there is Sunday.
Though Fela Kuti’s original Shrine was burnt down, this replacement is possibly the best show in town. Just by showing up you’ll get a political education, a scandalising lesson in shakin’ it, and a contact high.
When Femi is outside of the country on tour, the place can be rather empty, however, there is always club nightout every Friday and the New Africa Shrine is always jam packed from 9pm till dawn.
Also, Seun Kuti performs every last Saturday of the month. The Shrine is located at No 1 Nerdc Road off Hakeem Balogun street, Agidingbi, Ikeja. Snacks, ice cream, palm wine, and more are on offer. Smoking is encouraged too.
